Over the centuries, the craft of lacquerware has evolved into a highly intricate and refined technique, with artistic expression taking centre stage.
For our lacquer products from Vietnam, the process begins with the creation of a base form made from wood, plywood or MDF. This raw piece then undergoes an elaborate procedure in which the surface is sealed and refined using a special filler. Each layer must dry completely before being sanded and polished multiple times. Only then can the final layers of color or metallic sheen and lacquer be applied.
To achieve the metallic sheen, very thin metal foils are applied in a process similar to gold plating. Finally, a transparent gloss lacquer is added to seal and protect the surface.
