Two-part wooden tansu chest of drawers. Width 113 cm, total height 98 cm (height lower part 52 cm, height upper part 46 cm), depth 45 cm. Antique from Sendai. Very good condition. The tansu consists of two independent elements that can be placed on top of each other, next to each other or separately. 2 large drawers, 2 medium drawers, 1 small drawer and a safe deposit box. Five drawers have a lock. Keys included. Side handles for transport. Suitable for storing dishes, documents and clothes.

The classic Japanese storage cabinet, called tansu. Its origins lie in the Edo period (1603-1868). Initially, the tansu were used by the samurai upper class as portable boxes for storing valuable items such as kimonos or swords. With the rise of prosperity and new production techniques, the tansu spread throughout the country by the 18th century and became standard furniture in Japanese households. A wide variety of designs and uses emerged. Tansu are made from high-quality wood. They are refined and strengthened by lacquering and iron fittings.
