The classic Japanese storage cabinet, called tansu. Its origins lie in the Edo period (1603-1868). Initially, the tansu were used by the samurai upper class as portable boxes for storing valuable items such as kimonos or swords. With the rise of prosperity and new production techniques, the tansu spread throughout the country by the 18th century and became standard furniture in Japanese households.
