Two-part tansu chest made of solid wood (keyaki/zelkova) – an original Japanese kimono chest from Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, made during the Meiji period (1868–1912). Antique in very good condition. Width 100 cm, total height 108 cm (lower section 52 cm, upper section 48 cm), depth 45 cm. The tansu consists of two independent elements that can be stacked, placed side by side, or used separately: 2 large, 2 medium and 1 small drawer, plus a lockable compartment with key. Side handles facilitate transport. Ideal for the stylish storage of clothing, tableware, documents or other personal items – featuring high-quality craftsmanship in the characteristic Japanese antique style.
The classic Japanese storage cabinet, called tansu. Its origins lie in the Edo period (1603-1868). Initially, the tansu were used by the samurai upper class as portable boxes for storing valuable items such as kimonos or swords. With the rise of prosperity and new production techniques, the tansu spread throughout the country by the 18th century and became standard furniture in Japanese households. A wide variety of designs and uses emerged. Tansu are made from high-quality wood. They are refined and strengthened by lacquering and iron fittings. Even in modern Japan, the tansu have lost none of their fascination. They are still in demand as functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture.
