Tenshi Sofa: A Classic Reimagined

The Tenshi was designed in 1996 — as a modular bed frame in wood, that adapts to the needs of its owner. This idea is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of living, in which a piece of furniture rarely serves a single function alone: the futon is rolled up in the morning, the room is freed. What was a sleeping space in the evening becomes living space during the day. The Tenshi Sofa translates this thinking into a new form: with a backrest, back cushions and bolsters, the familiar Tenshi modules are transformed into a fully functional sofa. At night one sleeps, during the day one sits — without the piece of furniture substantially changing its form.

The Tenshi Sofa consists of two Tenshi modules in Emmental fir wood and a backrest; all elements are mounted via plug-in connectors. The sleeping surface is an original Sato futon, available in two widths: the 80-centimetre futon sits flush within the frame; the 90-centimetre version extends slightly beyond the edge, creating a lounge effect. Using a futon ensures that the Tenshi Sofa remains not merely an upholstered sofa, but a fully functional bed. This choice must be made at the time of purchase in the webshop. The number of bolsters — none, one or two — is likewise selectable, as is the upholstery fabric in various colours.

For individual requests — whether regarding the number of cushions, retrofitting the backrest, or fabric selection — we are happy to assist by e-mail or in person at the shop. The model is on display at Sato.
