Shizuko Yoshikawa Objects and Everyday Items from Japan
The exhibition took place between 1 December 2022 and 28 January 2023. With an introduction by Lars Müller.
Shizuko Yoshikawa (1935–2019) studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm from 1961 and moved to Switzerland in 1964. She was married to Josef Müller-Brockmann (1914–1996), a pioneer of Swiss graphic design. After 1970 she worked as a freelance artist and was one of the representatives of the second generation of constructive-concrete art. As one of the few women in this art movement, Yoshikawa played a special role due to her Japanese origins and education. In her works she combined the rational concepts of modern European art with the poetry and tranquillity of the intuitive Japanese Zen tradition.
Yoshikawa's origins were also reflected in her living environment, where she surrounded herself with selected objects and everyday items from her homeland. We have brought together a selection of these mementos in a small exhibition in memory of the artist.
