Tatami, Bench or Floor – the Folding Seat That Adapts

The zaisu, Japan's legless floor chair, is one of the quiet classics of Japanese domestic life. Originally conceived for the tatami floor, it offers back support without abandoning the low, grounded way of sitting that defines traditional Japanese interiors. Its strength lies in its simplicity: no elaborate construction, just a straightforward seat with a firm backrest that holds you in place while leaving your legs free to stretch or fold as you please. The Folding Seat takes this idea and translates it into a form that fits naturally into the European way of living.

The Folding Seat works with disarming simplicity: its two equal halves fold open at the centre, the rear section rising to form a backrest while the front remains the seat. Placed on a wooden bench, it transforms a bare, uncomfortable surface into a cushioned seat with back support – no modifications required. Laid completely flat, it becomes a seat for two – perhaps the most charming surprise this unassuming cushion has to offer. Whether you are sitting upright at the dining table, relaxing on a bench, or settling in on the floor with a book – the Folding Seat adapts. This versatility makes it the most adaptable seat in the Sato range.

Dimensions: 49 cm wide, with a back height of 44 cm, a seat depth of 38 cm, and a total depth of 88 cm when the backrest lies flat.

The Folding Seat is available at our shop on Ausstellungsstrasse 39 in Zurich – in five fabric colours: yellow-green, sand, light blue, dove blue and orange.
