Tenshi Liege: The Essential Daybed
Designed by Sato, the Tenshi is a modular solid-wood bed that has stood out for its understated elegance since its launch in 1996. This classic has given rise to a small family of products, ranging from the bed on its own to the Tenshi Sofa with backrest and cushions. The Tenshi Liege (Daybed) sits right in between: it is what remains of the sofa once everything dispensable has been taken away. During the day it invites you to read and linger; at night it becomes a proper bed – with no conversion needed. In the spirit of Slow Living, the Tenshi Liege adapts to the rhythm of the day. This follows the traditional Japanese philosophy that a room can serve different purposes at different times of the day.
The Tenshi Liege consists of two modules in solid Emmental fir, made in Switzerland and joined by a simple slot-together connection. It measures 205 x 82.5 cm and is only 26 cm high. This keeps it close to the floor, making the room feel more open and spacious. As a result, it settles quietly into a room without dominating it. The pale grain of the fir gives it a calm, unassuming presence. On top lies a futon 80 cm wide, sitting flush with the frame. A long neck bolster measuring 70 x 15 cm can be added if desired; its shape recalls the kukurimakura, the traditional Japanese roll pillow. The fabrics are available in a range of colours, so the Tenshi Liege can be matched to the mood of a room.
