The Philosophy of Connection

Torinas follows a simple yet powerful idea: connecting discarded or surplus materials. The term 'Torinas' means 'bringing two or more people together and guide them to a good relationship' – precisely what the brand does with its materials. Seatbelt remnants become a seat and backrest that offer ample space without appearing obtrusive. Surplus Hinoki cypress wood is transformed into a sturdy durable seating frame with a warm presence. This is the sustainable design philosophy behind the Torinas Belt Chair Lounge.

Hinoki is valued not only for its fine grain but also for its natural resistance to moisture and pests. The belts themselves originate from the automotive industry, where they had to meet the highest safety standards – a quality that proves equally valuable when repurposed as seating material. In this way, discarded materials are given new life. Weighing just under eight kilogrammes, the lounge chair can be moved effortlessly without compromising stability.

The Side Table

The accompanying lightweight 'Triangle Side Table', crafted from the same wood complements the ensemble with its three-legged construction. Despite its compact footprint, it stands firmly and, at just over a kilogramme, can be repositioned with ease. The side table integrates discreetly into any environment whilst still offering sufficient surface area for a cup or a book. Together, these two pieces of designer furniture come together to create an elegant, restrained atmosphere that encourages you to slow down.

The Principle of Mottainai

The principle of Mottainai, the Japanese appreciation for reusing things, finds contemporary interpretation in this lounge chair. Moreover, this philosophy aligns perfectly with Sato's 'Slow Living' approach: true elegance emerges through appreciation of what already exists.
